Eggnog French Toast Recipe: Festive Holiday Brunch Idea

Eggnog French Toast is extra fluffy with golden edges, a touch of nutmeg and a rich eggnog flavor. Served with maple syrup and whipped cream, it makes a perfect Christmas morning breakfast. A plate of 4 pieces of eggnog French toast stacked on a white plate and topped with whipped cream and maple syrup.

This eggnog French toast takes a favorite French toast base and adapts it for the holidays. The result is soft and fluffy in the center with crisp, golden edges and a gentle nutmeg aroma. Simply swapping regular milk for eggnog gives the batter a creamy sweetness and seasonal flavor that feels indulgent but not overwhelming.

If you’re not keen on sipping eggnog on its own, don’t dismiss it in baked goods and breakfast dishes. It adds a subtle nutmeg note and creamy depth to treats without being too heavy. The eggnog flavor enhances familiar recipes without overpowering them.

Making Eggnog French Toast

Pouring maple syrup on a stack of eggnog french toast.

This variation is built from a classic French toast method with a few simple swaps and additions:

  1. Replace milk with eggnog for a richer, spiced base.
  2. Add ground nutmeg alongside cinnamon for warm holiday notes.
  3. Skip extra sugar in the batter because commercial eggnog is already sweetened.
  4. Add a splash of rum extract for an optional holiday accent.

I also stir in a little melted butter to the batter. It helps develop golden edges and adds buttery flavor—well worth the extra richness for a special breakfast. If you don’t have rum extract, it’s fine to omit it; the toast will still be delicious.

Pro Tip: Use day-old or slightly stale bread when making French toast. Staler slices absorb the custard without becoming soggy. You can dry fresh bread by leaving it loosely covered on the counter overnight. Thick-cut, soft breads like brioche or challah work especially well—they create a tender interior and crisp exterior.

This Eggnog French Toast is a cozy, easy holiday breakfast that’s quick to prepare and impressive to serve. If you’re planning a festive morning, it’s a great choice.

If you enjoy eggnog in recipes, consider other seasonal options like eggnog cinnamon rolls, eggnog pancakes, or eggnog cupcakes. For an easy make-ahead option, try an overnight eggnog French toast casserole.

  • 1 cup eggnog
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon rum extract, optional

Instructions

  • In a large shallow bowl, whisk the eggs until blended.
  • Whisk in the eggnog, melted butter, vanilla, rum extract (if using), nutmeg and cinnamon. Small butter clumps are fine—they’ll melt when frying.
  • Heat an electric griddle to 350°F or warm a large skillet over medium heat. Lightly oil the surface or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Dip a slice of bread into the batter, turning to coat both sides. Shake off excess and place on the hot griddle or pan. Cook until golden, about 2–3 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining slices.
  • Serve warm with maple syrup, whipped cream and a light dusting of nutmeg.

Notes

Serve immediately for best texture. Store leftovers in a sealed bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat on a plate in the microwave.
