This easy, no-bake Malteser slice is chewy and fudgy with crunchy Maltesers throughout. It’s topped with milk chocolate and extra Maltesers — the perfect slice for chocolate lovers.
Since I moved to Australia, I discovered Maltesers are a local favorite. Their crunchy malt centers and smooth milk chocolate are hard to resist. If you can wait a few minutes after shopping, use that time to make this simple Malteser slice — it’s quick and rewarding.
The Perfect Malteser Slice
These bars are fudgy with a sweet milk chocolate taste and a hint of malt. The base mixes Rice Bubbles (Rice Krispies), crushed biscuits and chopped Maltesers to give a chewy, soft texture with pleasant crunch. A chocolate topping holds the slice together and adds a glossy finish.
For the base you’ll combine cereal, crushed cookies and chopped Maltesers in a bowl. Choose crushed biscuits that aren’t overly sweet — digestive biscuits, Marie biscuits or Scotch Fingers work well. Walkers or Arrowroot biscuits are good alternatives.
Melt dark chocolate, sweetened condensed milk and butter together in a double boiler to create an extra-creamy chocolate fudge. If you use a microwave, melt on medium power in short intervals (about 45 seconds), stirring between each burst to avoid overheating.
Tip: Melt chocolate slowly over low heat. High heat can cause the chocolate to become grainy instead of smooth.
Pour the melted chocolate over the cereal and biscuit mix, stir until evenly coated, press into a lined pan and chill until firm.
For the topping, use milk chocolate or your preferred chocolate. Melt the chocolate with a little butter for a shiny, easy-to-slice finish. Pour over the chilled base and smooth the surface — there’s something irresistible about glossy melted chocolate.
When the top chocolate is about 80% set, score the surface with a thin knife where you’ll cut the bars. This prevents the topping from cracking. Press a few extra Maltesers onto each bar before the chocolate sets completely.
Note: You’ll need one 140 g bag of Maltesers for the base plus extras for decoration. If you don’t plan to top each slice with a whole Malteser, one bag is enough.
These slices are chocolatey, malty and ideal for lunchboxes or a late-night treat. Kids love them, and adults will too.

Malteser Slice
Equipment
- 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) pan
Ingredients
Base Layer
- 1 cup Rice Bubble cereal (Rice Krispies)
- 1 bag (140 g) Maltesers, chopped
- 2 cups crushed biscuits (digestives, Marie, or shortbread)
- 200 g dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 can (395 g) sweetened condensed milk
- 55 g unsalted butter
Chocolate Topping
- 200 g milk chocolate, chopped
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- Extra Maltesers to decorate (optional)
Instructions
Base Layer
- Line a 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang.
- Combine the cereal, chopped Maltesers and crushed biscuits in a large bowl and mix evenly.
- Fill a medium saucepan with about 1–2 cm of water and heat over low. Place a heatproof bowl over the pan so its bottom does not touch the water.
- Add chopped dark chocolate, sweetened condensed milk and butter to the bowl. Melt gently over low heat with the water simmering underneath, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat.
- Pour the chocolate over the cereal mixture and stir to coat evenly.
- Press the mixture firmly into the prepared pan and chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
Chocolate Topping
- Melt the milk chocolate and butter in a double boiler over low heat until smooth, or microwave on medium power in 45-second bursts, stirring between each burst.
- Pour the melted chocolate over the chilled base and smooth the surface.
- Return to the fridge to set. When the chocolate is about 70–80% set and still slightly glossy, score the top where you intend to cut and press an extra Malteser onto each bar.
- To serve, lift the slice from the pan using the parchment overhang, place on a cutting board and cut using the scored lines with a sharp knife.
Notes
- A 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) or 23 x 23 cm (9 x 9 inch) pan works best. A larger pan will make the slice thinner.
- One 140 g bag of Maltesers is needed for the base; buy extras if you want to top each piece.
- For the dark chocolate in the base, 45–70% cocoa works well; avoid very strong dark chocolate.
- Store slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Nutrition info is an estimate per slice assuming 12 equal pieces.
