Grab Your Ingredients!

These dinner rolls use common pantry staples. For best results use whole milk and softened unsalted butter.

  • Whole Milk: Warm to 100–110ºF for activating the yeast. You can substitute lower-fat milk, but the rolls will be slightly less tender.
  • Instant Yeast: Instant yeast works well. Active dry yeast can be used but may require longer rise times.
  • Granulated Sugar: Adds a touch of sweetness that balances the honey.
  • Unsalted Butter: Soften to room temperature for the dough. Additional softened butter is used for the honey butter topping.
  • Honey: Adds flavor inside the dough and in the topping.
  • Salt: A small amount to enhance flavor.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Measure by weight if possible to avoid adding too much flour and creating dense rolls. Bread flour will yield a chewier texture.

What Baking Tools Are Needed?

Recommended tools: a stand mixer (or bowl for hand-kneading), a rolling surface, a quarter-sheet baking pan (or alternatives listed below), a baking brush for egg wash and honey butter, and a kitchen towel for rising.

Let’s Make These Honey Butter Dinner Rolls!

Overview of the process—see the recipe card below for exact measurements and timings.

  1. Whisk warm milk, 1 tablespoon sugar, and yeast in a mixing bowl. Cover and let sit 6–8 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add remaining sugar, softened butter, honey, salt, and flour. Knead until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the bowl (about 5–7 minutes with the proper attachments).
  3. Remove dough, lightly grease the bowl, return the dough, spray the top, and cover. Let rise 1–2 hours until doubled.
  4. Deflate the dough, roll to about an 8″ × 12″ rectangle, and cut into 12 pieces. Shape each into a ball by folding seams underneath and rolling on the counter.
  5. Place rolls on a greased quarter-sheet pan, cover, and let rise 30–45 minutes until doubled.
  6. Brush with egg wash and bake at 350ºF for 25–28 minutes until golden. Brush with honey butter after baking if desired.

Recipe FAQs

What size baking sheet do I need to make these dinner rolls?

A quarter-sheet baking pan works well. You can also use two smaller sheets, two 8-inch round pans, or a 13 × 9-inch baking dish.

Why are my dinner rolls dense?

Dense rolls are usually caused by adding too much flour or over-kneading. Weigh your flour when possible and knead only until the dough is soft and smooth.

Can I use bread flour in place of all-purpose flour?

Yes. Bread flour will give a chewier texture; you can also mix flours to achieve the texture you prefer.

These soft and fluffy Honey Butter Dinner Rolls are a delicious way to complete your holiday feast! They’re made with seven simple ingredients you likely have on hand.

Ingredients

Honey butter dinner rolls

  • 1 cup Whole Milk, warmed to 100ºF–110ºF
  • 2 1/4 tsp Instant Yeast
  • 2 tbsp Granulated Sugar, divided
  • 3 tbsp Unsalted Butter, room temperature
  • 3 tbsp Honey
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 3 cups + 1 tbsp All-Purpose Flour

Egg wash

  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tbsp Water

Honey butter topping (optional)

  • 3 tbsp Unsalted Butter, room temperature
  • 1 tbsp Honey

Instructions

  • In the stainless steel bowl of your mixer, whisk the warmed milk, 1 tbsp sugar, and instant yeast. Cover and let sit 6–8 minutes until foamy.
  • Add remaining sugar, softened butter, honey, salt, and all-purpose flour.
  • Attach the dough roller and scraper, then knead on low until the dough is soft and smooth, about 5–7 minutes.
  • Remove the dough, lightly grease the bowl, return the dough, spray the top, and cover. Let rise 1–2 hours or until doubled.
  • Deflate the dough, transfer to a lightly floured surface, and roll to an 8″ × 12″ rectangle. Cut into 12 pieces.
  • Shape each piece into a ball by folding seams underneath and rolling with a cupped hand.
  • Place rolls on a greased quarter-sheet pan, cover, and let rise 30–45 minutes until doubled.
  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Brush tops with egg wash (1 egg + 1 tbsp water) and bake 25–28 minutes until golden.
  • Remove from oven and brush with honey butter if desired (3 tbsp butter + 1 tbsp honey).

Notes

  • Warming the milk: Warm milk briefly on the stovetop and check with a thermometer. It should be 100–110ºF.
  • Storing: Keep rolls in a sealed bag or container at room temperature for 2–3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • Reheating: Reheat in a toaster oven on a low toast setting for 6–7 minutes, or warm in a 350ºF oven for 8–10 minutes.
