Quick Nutella Mug Cake Recipe Ready in Minutes

This fudgy, gooey Nutella mug cake sits between a warm brownie and a slice of rich chocolate cake. The batter uses Nutella and there’s an extra dollop in the center for a warm, chocolate-hazelnut pocket. It’s made in the microwave and ready in under 10 minutes.Nutella mug cake, with a spoonful taken out.

Updated April 9, 2024 with new photos and a slightly adjusted recipe for an even fudgier mug cake.

If Nutella were an official food group, I would wholeheartedly endorse it. This easy Nutella mug cake is quick, fudgy and perfect for one. The batter is mixed directly in the mug, microwaved until just set, and served warm. An optional scoop of ice cream or fresh fruit makes it feel extra special.

The cake comes out dense and chocolatey—more like a brownie than a fluffy cake—and adding a spoonful of Nutella in the center creates a molten core that oozes as you dig in.

How to Make Nutella Mug Cake

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons Nutella
  • 1 large egg (or substitute with 2 tablespoons milk + 1 tablespoon vegetable oil)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Plus an extra tablespoon of Nutella to dollop in the middle

Use a large, wide mug so the cake cooks evenly.

  1. In your mug, whisk the Nutella and the egg together until smooth. A fork works fine.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, flour and baking powder. Whisk until there are no visible lumps of cocoa or streaks of egg; this may take a minute or two. Mug with Nutella and an egg, and mug with Nutella and egg whisked together with flour, cocoa and baking powder added
  3. Place the extra tablespoon of Nutella in the center of the batter; you don’t need to press it down.
  4. Microwave on medium power for 90 seconds. Do not use high power, which can overcook the edges while leaving the center raw. Carefully check—when the top no longer looks wet and feels slightly springy, it’s done. If needed, continue in 15-second intervals on medium power until set. The mug will be hot—handle with care. How to Make 2 Mug Cakes

To double the recipe, multiply all ingredients by two. Combine the batter in a bowl, then divide evenly between two mugs and microwave each as directed.

This Nutella mug cake is fudgy and gooey—ideal for a single-serving dessert. Top with ice cream, fresh berries, whipped cream, or an extra drizzle of Nutella for added indulgence. Single serving Nutella cake in a mug, topped with ice cream and berries with glass of milk
